Windows XP WPA
If you use an Intel wireless card you must use these directions.
These instructions assume that you are running Windows XP SP2 or greater.
First, go to the Control Panel from the Start Menu and get to the "Network
Connections" folder. You may need to click "Network and Internet" if you are
not using Control Panel's "Classic" mode. Then, find your wireless card and
right click on it. Choose Properties.
Next, choose wireless networks.
Then, click "Add...". Enter "EECS-WPA" for the SSID, then choose WPA for
"Network Authentication" and TKIP for "Data encryption".
Next, choose the "Authentication" tab. Enable 802.1x (if needed) and choose
PEAP for the EAP type. Unclick "Authenticate as computer..." and
"Authenticate as guest...".
Click on "Properties". Enable "Connect to these servers" and enter
"wireless.cs.umn.edu". For "Authentication Method" choose "MSCHAP v2". Under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" enable the "Thawte Premium Server CA".
Click on "Configure". Uncheck "Automatically use my Windows Login..."
Click OK on all windows and close the Control Panel. Windows at this point
should prompt you to click an info box near the System Tray to display a
certificate check and a username and password dialog. This step is only
performed once and past that point Windows stores the Username and Password
on the computer.
After clicking on the info box the following username and password dialog is
displayed. Do not set anything for domain, but do enter your EECS Wireless
username and password provided by the EECS Wireless Access Tool.
At this point the following dialog will appear. You can check the
certificate to ensure it says 'wireless.cs.umn.edu' and then click OK on this
dialog. This dialog only appears on initial setup.
Now, you should see the following within a few moments, you are now connected!
