7 Temperature sensors for the labs.  We have had a lot of trouble with rooms getting too hot and too cold.  We would like to put  temperature sensors in the labs that connect to the network so we can keep a graph of temperature fluxations.  This will aid in correcting problems as they arise, and allow us to monitor the effect of changes made by Facilities Management.  $450.00 $3,150.00
1 Pharos print server machine.  The current machine we have has turned out to be too old and slow for the job.  This machine runs all of the printing operations in all itlabs.  If it were to fail, all printing would stop in all labs, so this machine really needs to be under a service contract.  We are also looking at ways to have a hot-standby system in line to take over if the main server should fail. $2,500.00 $2,500.00 $100.00
3 Three printers in the labs need to be replaced, cs3170b, cs4204a, and me308a.  These printers can be given to student groups.  More and more students are having problems printing files because HP uses postscript emulation, the Xerox printers we are buying now use licensed Adobe postscript.  We have had no problems with the Xerox printers and many problems with the older HP printers. $1,800.00 $5,400.00
39 We have 39 Dell computers that are 4 years old and need to be replaced. $3,000.00 $117,000.00 $3,900.00
13 We have 13 Sun computers that are 4 years old and need to be replaced. Because ProE needs high-end graphics, the price of these are higher than previous models. $3,500.00 $45,500.00 $7,800.00 $5,200.00
213 Maintaining the older mechanical mice has become quite labor intensive.  For this reason we recommend replacing all the mechanical mice with optical mice.  The cost of this is small compared to the cost of staff having to replace/fix the current mechanical mice. $12.40 $2,641.20
1 The systems staff needs a laptop to use for managing the labs.  In particular, the main use will be to supports the Windows 2000 computers.  We plan to keep ghost images for the different systems we have on the laptop so that it can be carried to the labs.  There are many other uses too. $2,000.00 $2,000.00 $100.00
1 Many students have asked for the ability to use the software that is installed on itlabs computers from non-itlabs computers (e.g., ADCS labs, dorms, home, etc.).  This is possible by setting up a computer that is an applications server.  Normally this is extremely expensive, but Microsoft has donated all the licenses we need to do this.  We propose to set up a Terminal Server computer to handle this task.  Right now we have set up older, retired, Dell computers to fill this need, but we really should have a dual-processor server with a lot of RAM to handle this task. $3,500.00 $3,500.00
250 Norton ghost software used to update all the Windows computers in IT Labs.  A new version has just come out, and we need to upgrade to that version. $6.75 $1,687.50

1 Install a CCTV system in EE/CS 4-250. $14,000.00 $14,000.00
200 Media player software is becoming more complex to manage.  RealOne software is frequently upgraded and new plug-ins are always coming on-line.  In orer to effectively mange Media Player, we need RealOne Desktop Manager. $10.10 $2,020.00
1 The server we have ruuning the Windows 2000 Active Directory is 4 years old, but is still working fine.  We grcommend extending it's service contract for 2 years instead of replacing it. $995.00 $995.00
