5 | We have 5 Dell PC computers in ME308 that are over 4 years old and need to be retired. | $2,500.00 | $12,500.00 | ||
1 | The overhead LCD projector in the ME302 High-End Graphics classroom went out of alignment at the start of fall semester. It must either be sent somewhere for repair, or replaced. Since it is almost 8 years old, we propose to replace it. | $15,000.00 | $15,000.00 | ||
1 | The HP Color LaserJet printer in the EE/CS 3-170 lab has been broken. The Xerox 8400DP color printer has worked well in ME308, so we propose to replace the broken printer with a Xerox 8400DP. | $2,500.00 | $2,500.00 | ||
12 | The window shades in ME308 and ME314 are not opaque. Replacing them with room darkening "rollease" shades will prevent sunlight from affecting the overhead projector screen in the new ME314 dual purpose classroom lab. (this was approved in the FY01 Summer proposal, but wasn't completed at that time). | $150.00 | $1,800.00 | ||
The older task chairs in the ITlabs have a very durable fabric, and thus are not showing their age at first glance. But they are getting old, and the back of the seat is very small and cannot be adjusted high enough for proper back support. This proposal is to begin the process of upgrading the chairs in EE/CS 4-250, ME308 and Civil 230 to the same chair we now use in EE/CS 3-170, 2-170, 2-172, and Lind 24. As this is approximately 270 chairs to be replaced, it is best to do it over several years/proposals. | |||||
Chairs for EE/CS 4-250 (one room of the 4-250/4-204 ITlabs) | $193.00 | $9,650.00 | |||
The lab consultants use pan/zoom/tilt network cameras to monitor the entrances to each IT computer lab. (this is different than the video surveillance cameras which automatically record what happens). The network cameras give us the ability to have someone check a remote lab in real time, to see if it was opened on time, to see if a lab attendant is showing up for work on time, or to check if the labs have been locked at night. Even in some cases to check if a printer is running low on paper, etc. | |||||
Currently we don't have a camera in EE/CS 2-170 or 2-172. | $2,500.00 | $5,000.00 | |||
Additionally, we would like to add a camera to EE/CS 3-166, ME314 and ME302. This would give us better coverage to most rooms in the ITlabs, and when a lab is unattended, it would give a lab attendant in a different lab a better ability to monitor the remote lab location. | $2,500.00 | $7,500.00 | |||
EE/CS 4-250 is the largest Itlab, consisting of 2 large rooms and one office-sized room. The one existing camera is not enough to give someone remotely monitoring the lab a good view. | $2,500.00 | $5,000.00 | |||
Currently all the IT Labs client machines are connected to Cisco 2924 switches. These switches are all over 5 years old and are not covered by any maintenance contract. The newer Cisco switches come with a life-time hardware guarantee and life time software upgrades. We recommend replacing the old switches that will soon be unsupported by Cisco. We also recommend getting the same switches that NTS is using in the new network upgrade so that we will be compatible with any future changes and enhancements made by NTS. | |||||
WS-C3750G-24T-S (24 ports 10/100/1000) | $3,600.00 | $100,800.00 | |||
1000BASE-SX SFP module | $300.00 | $2,700.00 | |||
1000BASE-LX SFP module | $600.00 | $1,200.00 | |||
The network switches in ME308 provide network to all the machines in ME308, ME314 and ME302. These switches are covered in dust and produce a lot of noise. The switches were designed to be hidden in a network closet, so the noise isn't normally an issue. Our proposal would be to get an enclosed standard network rack to keep the dust out as well as help keep the noise in the lab down to a minimum. | |||||
Enclosed network rack | $2,000.00 | $2,000.00 | |||
The current servers we have, wally.itlabs and ratbert.itlabs, are over 5 years old. Dell will not sell us a service contract on equipment that is that old. Since these are critical servers, that need a 7x24 service contract, we will need to replace them. It is also quite likely that they will start to break down soon. We recommend replacing them with two rack-mount servers. | |||||
Dell PowerEdge 2850 rack-mount server | $7,000.00 | $14,000.00 | |||
The current ITlabs windows domain controllers, wally.itlabs and ratbert.itlabs (which we recommend replacing this year), served many roles: license manager, file server, profile server, anti-virus server, etc. This makes it hard to maintain and reboot these machines during the day. We recommend getting 2 low-end servers to act as the domain controllers. This will make it easier to install security patches and reboot the domain controllers without impacting all the users. | |||||
Dell PowerEdge 750 rack-mounted servers. | $2,500.00 | $5,000.00 | |||
The program we use to distribute software to the Windows 2000 clients (WinInstall) has new scheduling features which can be performance intensive when over 100 machines are involved. We want to move this service off of the current domain controllers and onto a dedicated machine. | |||||
Dell PowerEdge 750 rack-mounted server. | $2,500.00 | $2,500.00 | |||
The current backup system for windows systems in ITLabs is running at capacity and we have no room for expansion. Newer LTO Ultrium 3 systems were just announced. LTO Ultrium 3 systems will backup 400 GB to one tape, which is far more than ITLabs needs, but the price is almost the same as the older LTO-1 systems used on the ITLabs UNIX backups. The CSE Department is also running at capacity on its windows backups, so we suggest splitting the cost of a new backup autoloader between ITLabs and CSE. This will also have the advantage of needing one less backup software license as CSE and ITLabs can share the cost of one license. | |||||
Gateway 823 LTO-3 Autoloader with 3 yr hardware support, 48 LTO-3 tapes, and SCSI Cables | $5,500.00 | $5,500.00 | |||
The space in the Computer Room that houses the IT Labs and CSE servers is getting crowded. Future server purchases will need to be rack mounted to allow more computers that take up less floor space. The 5 new servers and the LTO tape drive will all be rack mountable. | |||||
19" Rack, 1U LCD Monitor/Keyboard, KVM Switch, and 10' KVM Cable kits | $5,000.00 | ||||
More and more students are using wireless devices (e.g., laptops, PDAs, etc) while they are in the labs. Because EE/CS 3-166 and 3-170 were designed to shield the room from electromagnetic interference, the wireless access point we have in other parts of the building do not cover these rooms. Civil Engineering does not have any wireless Access points near the IT Lab, so we request putting an access point in there too. | |||||
Wireless access point for EE/CS 3-166, 3-170, Civil Eng 230 | $1,000.00 | $3,000.00 | |||
We have 63 Suns that are over 4 years old, but because of the decrease in use of Sun systems, we only recommend replacing 25 of them this year. We recommend reducing the number of Suns and increasing the quality of the machines. The Computer Science Department has software licenses that require Sun computers. | |||||
Sun Blade 1500 Workstation,1 1.2-GHz UltraSPARC IIIi Processor w/1-MB L2 Cache, Sun XVR-600 Graphics Accelerator,2-GB DDR Memory,1 80-GB 7200 RPM IDE Disk Drive,16X DVD-ROM,10/100/1000-BaseT Ethernet,IEEE 1394&USB Ports. | $5,000.00 | $125,000.00 | |||
3 years hardware maintenance | $500.00 | $12,500.00 | |||
| Grand Total | $333,150.00 | ||||||
