1 All the locks on the doors to the IT Labs are now programmed using and HP Ipaq handheld PocketPC.  While testing and debugging this, the CS department loaned an IPaq to IT Labs.  Now that we are sure this is the way we are going be programming the lock in the future, IT Labs needs to purchase an IPaq.  We also recommend a carrying case and the Canon Network Camera software for PDA's $800.00 $800.00
50 The older task chairs in the ITlabs have a very durable fabric, and thus are not showing their age at first glance.  But they are getting old, and the back of the seat is very small and cannot be adjusted high enough for proper back support. This proposal is to continue the process of upgrading the chairs in EE/CS 4-250, ME308 and Civil 230 to the same chair we now use in EE/CS 3-170, 2-170, 2-172, and Lind 24.  As this is approximately 220 chairs to be replaced, it is best to do it over several years/proposals. $196.00 $9,800.00
2 We need two more web cameras, one in Lind 24 and one in CivE 230.  The lab consultants use pan/zoom/tilt network cameras to monitor the entrances to each IT computer lab.  (this is different than the video surveillance cameras which automatically record what happens).  The network cameras give us the ability to have someone check a remote lab in real time, to see if it was opened on time, to see if a lab attendant is showing up for work on time, or to check if the labs have been locked at night.  Even in some cases to check if a printer is running low on paper, etc.  $2,500.00 $5,000.00
39 We have 38 Dell PCs in CivE 230 that are 4 years old this August that need to be replaced.  We also need one computer for the Lab consultant in 4-250 $3,000.00 $117,000.00
18 In 2001 we created a "High-End Graphics and Parallel Computing Lab" in ME302.  These machines are now 4 years old and need to be replaced.  After discussions with ME and AEM, we recommend replacing this UNIX based lab with Windows PCs because applications like ProE and Ansys run better on Windows.  The systems we recommend getting are Dell Precision 370s with the new 24 monitors.  The high-end graphics portion of the lab was never used very much, but the parallel computing was.  Currently we have 11 dual-cpu Sun computers connected to a GigE network, and this distributed parallel-computing environment is heavily used by several classes.   $3,000.00 $54,000.00
8 Because the distributed computing environment in ME302 is going away, we recommend getting 8 dual CPU rack mount computers to handle the distributed parallel-computing needs. $3,500.00 $28,000.00
1 Students have requested wireless access in the study room Lind Hall 150.  This will require a small amount of conduit, wiring and an access point. $1,500.00 $1,500.00
70 The carrels in many of the older IT Labs are small, do not have a good way of managing the cables, and have no place to store the CPU case.  Over the next 2 years we would like to replace the old carrels in EE/CS 3-170/3-166 and 4-250/4-204 to match the tables recently put in Lind 24, ME314, and EE/CS 2-170/20172)  These tables provide a much better work environment for the students.  This cost includes table, CPU shelf, delivery and installation. $250.00 $17,500.00
1 Since replacing the carrels in EE/CS 3-166/3-170 will require removing all the computers and existing carrels, we recommend upgrading some of the network and power.  Currently the south wall does not have any conduit installed so we have been using extension cables.  This is a violation of current building codes which needs to be corrected.  We also recommend painting the room while it is empty. $17,000.00 $17,000.00
9 We have 9 Sun Blade 1500s that were bought last year with only 521 MB of RAM, they have been running rather slow so we put a GB of RAM in one that CS purchased and the improvement was dramatic.  Also we will be installing the newest OS (Solaris 10) very soon and the additional memory will be a big help. $175.00 $1,575.00
5 Annual preventave maintenance package from Classroom Management for the five ceiling-mounted projectors we have in IT Labs.  They will clean the filters, test the bulb for remanining life, adjust all output levels, etc. $175.00 $875.00
1 eRecuiting - This is a site license cost for the software used by IT Career Services.  The $15,000 cost will be split 50%/50% between upper and lower division.  See the minutes of the March 24 meeting for more details $7,500.00 $7,500.00
Grand Total $260,550.00
