8 | Over the last several semesters we have seen a huge increase in the use of Virtual Machines for instructional use. VMs allow instructors to increase their options when designing the scope of their curiculum. The main reason for this is that VMs allow us to give root or administrator permissions to students so they can work on the the linux kernal, or install special software. It also gives faculty the ability to allow their students to simulate computer security attacks (hacks) against other VMs so concepts in computer security can be taught in a manner that will not put the rest of the network at risk. This semester we ran out of availble machines to run VMs on and we have been informed that other faculty will want to include VMs in their classes in the future. This proposal is for eight more servers (we currently have eight) to use for VMs. In some classes each student needs 2 or more VMs, so multiple cores and a lot of ram is needed to give us the ability to create large numbers of VMs. | $5,000.00 | $40,000.00 |
28 | We currently have 28 Sun computers that have reached the end of their 4-year life cycle. We plan on replacing them with Sun computers that use AMD CPUs. The reason for this is that Sun will run Windows, linux, and Solaris. Over the next four year, the distribution of machines that run one of these three operating systems will change, however it is impossible to predict what that distribution will be in advance. Having the ability to change the OS from semester to semester on each machine will allow us to meet the needs of the students that use the lab. | $3,500.00 | $98,000.00 |
2 | The ME department is having a problem with submitting MS Word documents when using WebCT. To get around this they ask students to submit PDF files. Word has a problem converting some documents to PDF, so to get around this they have asked that an HP Digital Sender 9250c be installed in ME308. Regardless of if this problem can be solved by other measures, we have been told by both ME and AEM that the HP Digital Sender 9250c is a fantastic way to scan documents to PDF and automatically email them to anyone. We feel that this would be a great addition to the IT Labs. We want to start with two and see how they are utilized by students and then put them in every lab. | $3,000.00 | $6,000.00 |
2 | EE/CS 3-170 has two printers that are heavily used and are constantly jamming and breaking down. These printers have reached the end of their 4-year life cycle. Two new printers will be able to handle high volume printing and come with an extended on-site warranty to assist with maintenance. | $3,500.00 | $7,000.00 |
3 | The projectors in Lind 24, EE/CS 2-170 and 2-172 only support low resolution, have low brightness, and are out of warranty. These new projectors will be supported by classroom management as well as be of higher quality and brightness. They will also guarantee the bulbs and have any parts on hand for repair. | $6,000.00 | $18,000.00 |
