Minutes of the ITICC Meeting,
November 21, 2002
3:35 p.m., 3-230 EE/CS
Present: Rahul Akolkar (ME), Graham Allen (Phys), Bill Arnold (CE), John Baxter (Math), Christopher Bingham (Stat), Evan Bollig (ITSB), Tom Chase (ME), John Hall (Math), Peter Hudleston (IT Stud Aff), Phil Kachelmyer (ADCS), Kent Kirkby (Geol), Larry LeMay (ADCS), Jim MacDonald (ITLabs & CSciE), Dan MacEwan (Chem), Krishnan Mahesh (AEM), Mark Nicosia (BME), Karen Swanberg (Geol), Anand Tripathi (CSci), Lucas Veverka (ITSB)
1) Status Reports from CSciE and ADCS
MacDonald reported that we are on track to open the new computer classroom/labs in EE/CS by the start of spring semester. The conduit is in place, the computers are here. Tables need to be purchased. Classroom scheduling will be done on line via the web.
Kachelmyer reported that ADCS is in the process of replacing one staff person.
2) Fall 2002 Lab Improvements - Air Conditioning in CE 230
Hudleston said that the only public lab improvement planned for the fall round is the upgrading of air conditioning in CE 230, as described in the previous minutes. We are in the process of getting a detailed work plan from Facilities Management. When costed out, Hudleston will bring a formal proposal to ITICC for approval. He explained that Civil Engineering has plans to modify an adjacent room as a computer lab/classroom, and that there may be possibilities of getting the work done under a single project (air conditioning is a significant part of both), with associated cost savings. He has talked to John Gulliver, head of the Civil Engineering department about this. There may be a problem in timing, however, since Civil has not yet found a source of funding for its project.
3) Other Business
Chase will shortly schedule the first meeting of the subcommittee to seek improvements in the way in which the public labs are run. Student volunteers were asked to join the group, and Rahul Akolkar, Evan Bollig and Lucas Veverka all agreed to serve if needed.
Bollig mentioned that he had difficulty using ftp.umn with Redhat Linux 8.0. MacDonald suggested that he try using the Computer Science server ftp.cs.edu rather than ftp.umn.edu. If there is a problem with the umn server, however, it should be fixed.
